The expedition

This summer the sailing vessel Infinity, lead by captain Clemens, will sail the so-long dreaded Northwest passage attempting to reach the Northernmost inhabited settlement on the planet: Alert. Located at 82º latitude, it is one of the most remote places on earth, having been reached only by few people. To reach this destination, Infinity will sail through the Nares Strait, a narrow channel known for its fierce currents and rapidly moving mountains of ice, waters which are usually hazardous for navigation.

Being able to sail this far North will be a stark warning to the world. It is usually not possible due to ice coverage, but following the two warmest summers in history, we will most likely succeed.

The route is over 4,000 miles, speckled with 36,000 islands is a truly vast labrynth of ice; just 10% of which has been chartered.

Dutch Harbor, Alaska

Nuuk, Greenland

I will be joining the expedition in Dutch Harbor, Alaska and we will head North. Sailing along the Northwest passage into Baffin Bay with high density of floating ice and icebergs in the open areas. We will then venture into the Nares Strait in order to reach Alert. From there, ice permitting, we will attempt to sail North of Greenland and circumnavigate it, there is however a very low chance that we will be able to do this because of ice coverage. If we are not able to do it, from Alert we will head back South until Nuuk. The expedition will continue on from here to the Azores, Portugal. I will leave the boat in Greenland to go back home.
